Pension Day depicts a rural scene which faced many pensioners in the 1980s. The painting hung on the wall in the Westby-Nunn Cottage at Klippe Rivier Country House, Swellendam. The late Appie was married to Elise Bodley, the famous botanical illustrator, and his son Ben-Erik is Professor of Botany at the University of Johannesburg.
