This charming Victorian watercolour hung in the sitting room of Klippe Rivier Country House. Swellendam.
Bernhard Horwitz was born in Neustrelitz, schooled in Berlin and died in London. His patrons included HRH the Princess of Wales and the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburgh-Strelitz. Horwitz was also a famous German English chess master and chess writer from 1837 to 1843. He was part of a group of German chess players known as The Pleiades, and moved to London in 1845.
